oil worry!

I havn't checked the oil in a long time, today I did just that. I took out the dip stick wipedit off, then dipped away but when I pulled it back out, the stick was dry.
I was very much alarmed because the warning light didn't come on at any time. At the time the car was on a slight incline from the front end facing downward.
I often drive with the window open, so I listen to the engine. The engine always has sounded smooth. I quickly pour in ome oil, approx 3litres of magnatec. I checked the oil again straight after pouring it in. The amount of oil was about half a centimetre above the max. I am puzzled to how this can be. I was especially worried because we had to travel to London today.
It is going in for the 90k service on tuesday so maybe something cn be detected.
I would appreciate anyone view to what might be wronge here if there is something to worry about. All in all the oil light did not come on so this is something to overcome for starters.
