I find a smartphone, such as iPhone or a Samsung does the trick too. If you have one, then use the sat nav on that. There's regular free updates to maps, plus the benefit of it being a phone to make calls, send e-mails etc. They can be expensive to buy outright, but there's some great deals on them nowadays on "pay as you go", or on a Contract basis.

I wouldn't spend £100 to update the maps on a built-in sat nav either... I'd rather use my phone.
