I run my own property maintenance business and use my 1996 940 LPT estate, previously the 240.
I found a load cover and it hides all my cheap and basic tools. It's an auto with the B230FK engine. Really nice to drive and more comfortable than my 1989 240 GLT auto that I still have 9 years later.
I have spent a grand bringing it up to spec and even got the AC working.
I bought the 940 as I wanted a car with more luxury like ABS, AC, Electric sunroof, drivers airbag etc. Apart from the AC when I bought it, it all worked.
The best thing is both cost virtually nothing to buy. 240 £350 9 years ago and 940 £250 but spent a further 1k. I like that they are both automatics.
240 needs some TLC and rust repairs in the spring/ summer but very simple and reliable. I like the B230E engine.
I also have a hankering for a Toyota land cruiser Colorado VX auto diesel model but 2-3k for a late 90's early 2000 model. The non VX not as well equipped as my 940. Love the styling of the amazon but mega money.
I bet fuel economy isn't great on a 3 litre diesel auto! Insurance is £650, 940 £450.
