Default Transmission 'clunk' going from R to D

Our 2005 2.5T has some transmission noises that I don't like the sound of.

When changing from R to D it seems to pause for a second, then give a significant clunk and jolt before it's in gear. This seems to only happen when warm. In normal driving - when taking your foot off the accelerator then putting down again eg when going through a roundabout - it occasionally does the same thing. Seems to hesitate then jump into gear.

The garage (local one but apparently volvo specialist) said that the transmission is programmed to go into neutral briefly between gears or when you take your foot off the accelerator and that the only fix is to change that in the software which 'only Volvo can do'. Does this seem plausible? Any other likely causes?
