Volvo had some kind of tie up with Renault back in the day of the 440.
I recall the 1.7 440 was powered by the same engine as the 1.7 Renault 5's etc [OMG!!]
Well I personally don't like the Dci. Quite diesel and good economy too but in the Renault guise - quite a fragile unit.
I think basically very sensitive to oil changes, i.e. Renault suggested 18k services which just didn't suit the Dci hence EGR's getting fouled up - causing running issues - and in worst case - BOOM!
I ran a 53 plate Clio dci80 changed the oil at every 6k on fully synth with genuine filters and it ran fine, but i know of many that wasn't so lucky.
