I have never needed to but would do so if needed with no qualms. In fact I cannot remember the last time I needed to fit the spare to a vehicle because of a puncture.
Apart from the speed restriction of the spacesaver they must have the same loading capacity. Remember they are inflated to 60 or 65 psi rather than the 30 or 40 of normal tyres on a v or xc70.
All tyres will state their maximum load at a maximum pressure, provided the space saver matches the tyres fitted to the car in that respect just observe the speed restriction on the spacesaver.. Better to ascertain this at home before you set off than try doing it on a wet and windy night on the hard shoulder in the depths of nowhere mind..
