Get someone else to start it and watch the aux belt. If you can see flapping it's a very strong pointer to the alternator clutch.
If nothing take the belt off and see if the noise is gone.
Another candidate would be the a/c compressor clutch bearing. Typically there is a droning whine peaking at about 1200 rpm. ( 2.4 D)
