I do not grease the tow ball as the empty reciver under the car will attract road dust if greased, this road dust/grease will quickly transform into an effective grinding paste if not cleaned every time the detachable ball is fitted. Try painting oil under the car and see the sculptures the road dust gets formed into.
Duck oil dries leaving a lubrication film. Certainly my tow bar has never been greased by my volvo dealer at service time in the 6 years its been fitted..
