When I charge mine I connect a smart ar5e charger to the battery and chassis then shut the bonnet and lock the car as normal. My reasoning is that if I don't lock it then the various electronics will remain active for longer and draw power out of the battery at the same time as I'm trying to put it in.

I've never tried one of those chargers that you connect via a 12V socket but I guess you could still just shut the door and lock the car.

For 5 or 6 weeks I wouldn't worry and would expect the car to start fine after that period. I'm sure a second hand car dealer once told me that cars that have been on the forecourt even for a few months usually still start OK without any additional help (and you know how honest those chaps are ).
