I was thinking of very slowly slackening off the centre drain plug (the one that helps indicate the correct fluid level) until a very small amount leaks out onto a piece of kitchen roll to indicate how red or black it might be.
Depending on what the fluid looks like then I could decide to stick with my original plan or bring forward the fluid change?

just change it dont take short cuts with auto boxes fluid is cheap. new auto box is 4k
