Yeah, lift the bonnet and in the top left, towards the windscreen, there's the expansion header. Just unscrew it slowly when everything is stone cold and see if you have any pressure built up.

That'll tell you if it's the head gasket that's gone - The build up will be exhaust gasses getting into the system. It'll explain the brown (oil) in the coolant and the smell.
