Just to add to this thread. My handbrake passed the MoT fine, I watched as he did the brake test and it pulled up perfectly. However I've just dismantled it and found the lining from one shoe was completely detached from the backplate.
So be warned, just because a handbrake works fine does not mean that it is fine!
I was lucky, I've replaced mine with no damage done but it could very easily have been much worse.
