Years ago I once deliberately down-changed to second gear from high speed in our hateful Ford Onion and instantly wrecked the gearbox and lost drive, I never did find out from the guy who took it away for drink-monies what was wrong.
I'm guessing the huge increase in gear speed to 'catch up' with the cars actual speed is enough to destroy bearings/gear wheels etc.
In this case I guess a replacement good known g/box will be needed, be worth getting it checked over or speak to a g/box specialist and describe exactly what happened - they'll have seen it all before no doubt.
