Start with 1200 grit , very soapy water & finish off with 2000 grit with very soapy water . BUT you MUST polish with a G3 polishing compound to remove any fine scratching and this is before you apply any UV resisting varnish / paint / lacquer .
You are aiming for a like new or almost like new finish prior to sealing .
I know the score as I have done many headlights to ensure they pass their MOT
You can at a push , use a G3 polish with a mopping machine , BUT make sure you mist with clean water to ensure you do not overheat & mark the plastic & keep the abrasive particles mobile in the mop / sponge

Have done several sets myself now and pretty much this though I did use wet 800 grit on the really bad ones... and finished with some Autosmart Evo 1 with the machine and then a hard wax. Last set were done about 6 months ago, car has been washed once since then and they're still perfectly clear so not 100% convinced by need for the UV miracle sprays to be honest...
