I had this on my much beloved Rescue Dog V70 D5. Especially visible smoke at night, in other car's headlights - less so during the day. Changed a bunch of stuff in pursuit of the issue. Much of what I changed made the car a lot faster, or a lot more economical, so it was actually a pretty good process, even if the smoke proved remarkably persistent.

For me the key realisation was that the crank sensor was probably a third-party copy. Replacing that with a 100% dead cert Volvo one made a huge difference to smoke levels. However! before the crank sensor I had changed the Intercooler; cleaned up the boost pressure sensor in the intercooler, which had come out thickly coated in oil; changed the half-collapsed rubber elbow bringing air into the turbo; cleaned the EGR elbow; fitted an EGR blanking plate; and cleaned out the turbo with a detergent spray thing called Revive...

At the end of all that I had a D5 that went like stink. Overtaking lorries on alpine passes in biblical thunderstorms? No problem. Cruising to Berlin in a single Day? Simples.

Like yours, mine was smoking merrily away in the mid 150's. By the time I sold it earlier this year it was on 189k, with no sign at all of any reason why it might not have carried on to 289k.And were it not for the T-Charge, meaning that every time I went out I'd be paying £21 for the literal privilege, I'd have hung on to that car until the sun exploded.
