On mine it was the crankshaft position sensor installed in the top of the bell-housing that developed an intermittent fault, probably in the wiring. Easy and fairly cheap to eliminate but not particularly easy to spot the first time you look for it.
Be carefull not to drop the screw bolt into the bell-housing or ease and cheapness dissipate rapidly.
