Yes, I think I was being an idiot in even undoing those flipping bolts in the first place. I think a more intelligent person would simply have eased the exhaust manifold back off the studs on the head without detaching it from the downpipe... I really don't know why I never thought of that.
Plan B was scrap the car.
Performance: Yes, the car was quite noticeably better after the job.
What's next? Nothing, I dearly hope. (Next obvious job is the timing belt on the 740 - but by all accounts that will be child's play compared to this. )
