Sorry to be so late getting back to you but I have been suffering through a carpal tunnel problem for a couple of months.

But I am now back on the job. I would love to simply splotch the backs of the camshaft gears as show but on my engine I cannot reach them from the rear at all.

I do have a camshaft lock tool however.

I now have the camshaft gears marked and aligned with the cover marks and the crankshaft locating pin is about at the one o'clock position.

If I remove the other end of the camshafts and affix the locking device can I then proceed to the removal of the top of the engine secure in the knowledge that everything is kosher and as long as I do not move the engine while the head is off [will I ever get there!] that I can change out the head gasket, reinstall the head and be fairly confident that everything will still be aligned?
