I have mine set at 12 volts, so when dash cam uses battery power to that level it switches off to save enough power to start the car.
It has its downside though, if you don't drive the car for a few days you have no parking monitoring system so defeats the object.
I was toying with the idea of the battery pack, but $400 is too much money.
So I am going to try the power banks that you can charge tablets etc with.
Was thinking of charging that from the power socket whilst driving then changing the power cable over to use the parking function, much cheaper option.
Why not run the camera from the power bank permanently but charge the power bank only when running - many power banks have both input and output connections which can be used simultaneously. The input through puts to the output whilst maintaining the charge in the battery pack.
