Always lift a PV trunk lid in the centre. If you lift it quickly at the outer end of the lower edge it can bend the hinges. I think I'm right in saying that the lock catch for the open position is only on one side so you will also bend the hinge that way. Lift to release the catch and then lower with care using the handle.
With a bent hinge, the lid won't close correctly but you don't have to be too brutal to tweak the lid and bend the hinges back to square. If the lid is badly out of line it can come down and chip the paint.
