Just as an aside to the nicking of cars via the keys, the latest advice is also NOT to leave car keys on hall tables, telephone tables, hooks in the hall etc. Apparently, poor people desperate for a car are using long, lightweight fishing rods and tackle to 'fish' for the keys through the letter box!
Dog does work well. My first Golden Retriever prevented two break-ins at our house in Northumberland, (one when I was away at sea, after which the dog decamped from his basket in the kitchen, and slept across Marion's bedroom door on the landing, until I came home on leave, when he went back to the kitchen), and also stopped my first company car from being stolen.
He was asleep in the shade in the 'boot (it was a hatchback, he used to come with me, with the back seat down flat for room) thieves had used a slidebar hammer on the drivers door lock, then the dog had erupted out of the back!! When I got to the car he was sitting in the drivers seat, looking very pleased with himself!
