I always brim to brim my tanks and calculate the MPG. I only use the gauge as a tell-tale as to whether things are getting better or worse...
Anyhow my point is V70/XC70 that I have owned/driven...
2002 V70 163 D5 manual (113k, owned from new by my dad, then my sister, then me) - easy to get over 50 mpg, over 55 mpg on steady A-road runs. I once had it over 60 after a week of steady commutes from Hull to the outskirts of York on the A1079 probably averaging 45 mph.
2005 XC70 163 D5 auto AWD 70k (owned from 3 months old by my dad, then me) averaged 39, could get it to 45 on a steady motorway run.
2008 XC70 185 (but P*'d) auto AWD 100k - my current daily driver - dreadful 32-33 mpg from mostly steady motorway commute. My 2003 XC90 does 1 mpg better...
2013 XC70 215 auto AWD 52k - my dad's current daily driver - can get 42 mpg on a steady motorway run.
The 163 BHP was, by some margin, the most economic and refined of all the D5's. If only it had been available with the 6-speed auto. But in MPG terms - AWD knocks you 3-5mpg and auto a similar amount.
Sadly in the pursuit of lower emission KPI's, modern diesels run at sub-optimal ratios and this perversely reduced MPG. It's the same with new trucks. I remember my first turbo diesel car - 1996 1.9Tdi Passat - would regularly exceed 60 mpg. I could get 62 with a A/C off.
