They normally work mainly on how many starts, time since last reset, average speed, how many regens etc,
However my Insignia had a life indicator that if I reset it without changing the oil would remain at 0% which makes me think there was something else monitoring the colour of the oil or some sort of complete sorcery that can measure the viscosity.
