Ill mirror the above, aux belt snapped. If it hasnt taken out the timing belt you are very lucky!
If the engine drove as normal that would point to it being ok. It could be that something has failed internally within the alternator which is making the noise and not a snapped belt.
Im inclined to say that the engine isnt seized since you drove it home, only way would be if it it was water or oil pump failure and you just made it home as it was about to weld itself, which it did once switched off. This us unlikely if you didn't get overheat or oil warnings.
It could actually just be the alternator pulley.
Check SiRobb on youtube (a member here) regarding the pulley, you will then see how things should be in the engine bay regarding belts etc, giving you something to work with to have a look yourself.
