I would think you have a solid rear axle (shafts inside the axle) being a 940 turbo but I suppose the IRS system with open shafts is possible. It does sound likely that is is a failed bearing either diff end or wheel end. Was there free play in the wheel (wobble)?
Did you also check the prop shaft (from gearbox to axle)?
