No, front wheel drive.
My guess is that because the rolling radius of the front wheels were smaller than that of the rears, anything other than gentle acceleration fooled the car into thinking the front wheels were wheels spinning, when they were not, making the TC light flash and power cut to the driving (front) wheels.
Anyway, posted my reply a page too early, didn't see that op had bought new 17" wheels anyway.
