Did it anti-clockwise when it was first advertised two years ago, it's getting very busy now as it's a "bucket list" trip. Took it slowly in a big motorhome, stopping regularly to visit beaches and sights. A lot of single track roads with passing places, where you don't want to meet 20 vw's in convoy! We visited Skye which was very busy even then. Applecross is very narrow with hairpin bends.
The north east coast is not much, so we made a figure of eight once we'd done it to take in Aberdeen, St Andrews etc. which is much more interesting.
There is a special map with places to visit, but honestly, it's a marketing ploy, so tick it off if you must, but just use a guide like Lonely Planet to pick places to visit and make your own route.

Take your time and enjoy Scotland. We took a fortnigjt and that was too short.
