When in gear the engine is having to turn the gears and pump in the box so it slows down. Opposite when out of gear. Carbs need to be in good order to get the engine to tick over slowly and smoothly. With an auto, it will always be a compromise when you have carbs. You'll just have to try and get a smooth and reliable tick over as low as possible when out of gear but one that doesn't make the engine stall when you put in gear. A good compromise gives you a very slow creep when in traffic, so you just use a gentle touch on the brake to do the stops and starts.
