Every volvo I've had (340 -> S70) I've spent a fortune on repairing and fixing the headlight wipers. I've come to the conclusion I'm never going to drive my 240 in heavy snow, so have happily deleted and removed the entire assembly. Never did the American and Canadians any harm, as they never got 240s with headlight wipers...
Good luck with your efforts, and try not to cry when you find out how much the little clips on the end of the arm cost...
