I've not caught my fingers personally, my wife has though once, we also have a Golf mk7 and yes the handles are less prone to pinching. Is this an oversight by Volvo?
Probably but VW is very good at the little touches the door pockets are for example rubber lined to prevent items from rattling around its these little attention to details that make the VAG group cars feel a bit more special if a little bland.
The Volvo though does feel well put together and a little more unique and I prefer to be inside the V40 more than the Golf.
Sorry cannot really help other than to say yes the handle can give you a nip, as for the parcel shelf! Never had an issue with that and cannot see how you could cut your head on it, it doesn't feel to cheap to me either just very light.
