Uniqueue - that's brilliant - many thanks - just the sort of detailed description I was searching for on the internet.
So it does look as if the mechanism isn't operating correctly even when I turn the key to lock it.
As soon as the rain stops (yes it's now raining in France as well) I'll go out and have a look.
