I cheated. I removed the retaining springs from the old struts while holding the tailgate up by hand using my free hand. Then i popped the strut off the ball connectors on one side and let the dead strut drop on the floor, fitting the new one with my free hand. Repeated procedure for the other side then recovered the dead struts from the floor.
Job done!
