Thanks for the explanation re the / last 20%, I never knew that ! I'd not paid the alternator any attention, buried as it is; I just had a look, it is indeed not directly driven by the belt but via an assembly bolted to the side of the engine (3.0 T6 petrol).
The charger is only 7A, the battery has been on charge for a day. The charger indicates it is fully charged, it's holding it at 13.28V according to my multimeter.
