Having owned both engines under consideration, I would look for a well maintained D5 - the new VEA D4 just isn’t in the same bracket.

I beg to differ that the 3rd Gen D5 is completely different - the head/intake/injectors/exhaust and turbo's are changed but the block I think still dates back to the original.
I would agree the D5 is the best choice, but as the car is a late XC60 that also means choosing between 8-speed gearbox and FWD or 6-speed and AWD. The better economy might be more important to the OP. And the VEA isnt by any means bad.....
