I think in
this video I watched (or maybe it was part 1) there's an anecdote about someone who rebuilt an engine and used the same camshaft (or similar to that effect) because it looked fine, what they hadn't taken into account was that the failure had knocked the lobes all out of sync so the timing was all wrong and the engine wouldn't work.
