Right, i'm confused now - the way i've always understood things gearboxes were :

M45 - 4-speed
M46 - 4-speed + O/D
M47 - 5-speed

Going all the way back to the 145 i had when i was 17, the Volvo handbook depicted the M45 and M46 - the M47 hadn't come along when it was printed.

Also as mentioned in my post above, the Haynes Book of Fantasy reckons the B230E has an 8.5" (216mm) with all other models using a 229mm/9" clutch.
To me that is counter-intuitive, the B230E being the most powerful (n/asp) engine available should theoretically have the largest clutch.
As such it would make more sense that the others had the 8.5"/216mm and the B230E had the 9"/229mm clutch.

All my other Volvos since that 145 have been auto (except the 360GLT and a very short-term 440Li that isn't really a proper Volvo IMHO) so i've never needed to go anywhere near a clutch on a Volvo.
