Any there and back figure has to take into account the burn off of the first run. Back in the winter took landrover the 114 miles to Cardiff, car normally does A, B and rural lanes or off road miles. Motorway speeds burned off the accumulated crud and it ran sweet as a nut on the way home, returning better mpg and smoother engine.

Twice a year I tow to Scotland with the volvo, never had the same mpg twice. D5 is more than capable of holding 60mph into a stiff headwind if you are prepared to pay for the fuel and sometimes you just want to get there.

I normally run branded fuel but will use supermarket if nessesary, the 8 to 10 p a litre extra for premium I see no benefit in, I do occasionally use Lucus fuel additive to clean the system, while it makes a noticable difference on a dirty engine I have not noticed it on the volvo as that does long runs with very little town driving.
