Lordy lordy, what did I start...
In the end, thinking about the regulatory issues and the heat issues, I plumped for some actual genuine Volvo/Osram H7's to put in there, and resolved that if I felt a bit short of light I might get hold of one of those chinese LED bar arrays to slip inside the grille. I really don't like the idea of the active-cool LED arrays being kept on permanently by the DRL gubbins.
It was interesting to get the headlighs out from the car and then look at the state of the blown bulb, the still-working one, and the new elements: Clearly, old-school Halogens live a rather complex metallurgical life, hidden away inside the reflector!
Swapped the bulb set and cleaned it all for good measure. Astonished by the difference this makes.
