The new one was the same, apart from it had a round slotted o ring that was about 6mm tall, whereas the original had a flat / square sided one (also slotted) which was under 3mm high, never going to work, so I carefully removed the one from the old stat, which fell into three pieces, no other options available to me though so I stuck a thin bead of red instant gasket around the outside of the stat, pushed the o ring back into position, put a bead round the top and bottom of the housing and did everything up, amazingly no leaks.
