If grounding that cable (Ign ON) causes Relay to pick and Backing Lights to come ON, you've identified one of the two wires in the sleeving (and from the Wiring Diagram, I expect it to be the Black wire), and this wire needs to be connected to the switch on Gearbox lid which has one terminal (and which similarly supplies a chassis connection when reverse gear is selected). Grounding that wire should absolutely NOT influence the OD Solenoid.

The other wire (Yellow) is the source of power for OD Sol by way of 4th gear Sw...Do Not connect this to chassis, at any time, particularly with Ign ON and OD selected, as it would present a short to chassis, and blow Fuse 3. This wire should be connected to 4th gear enable switch on Gearbox lid (two terminals!), and the other side of this switch will have the Red going off to the Sol.
