Personally, I set up the timing so that the thing runs best at speed. In other words, I concentrate on the max advance at say 2,500 rpm seeing as most driving you do is around those engine speeds. What happens below affect slow engine speed running and idle. It's just me, but unless there were significant starting problems, I would never set up timing just based on what it starts like.

All said, you need a good in the region of 8 - 10 degrees minimum to achieve a good smooth idle. As such, as long as the max advance gives me the best performance AND it drops back to a good idle with no signs of pinking from idle to 2,500, all good. And with that, it should start absolutely fine. If setting it at just 5 statically results in all that, all good too!
