I did try the above method, not with the volvo seal I might add, but water got round the edges and pooled below the hinges, much less but if stood long enough or really bad rain it pooled and leaked. It either got in the hinge opening or in around the hinge casing.
It pooled so much that when I drove away I could hear the water run away.

I found my method posted earlier with the picture worked best for me and hasn't let any water collect at all below the hinges.

That area in all fairness is just a bad design.
