Personally I would go for a 5 cylinder diesel as the engine note will make the car feel that little bit more special.
If one isn't available then the 2.0-litre D2 (from Volvo) would be next choice...though I will admit it sounded like a canal boat when I tested one, especially compared to the old 2.0-litre Ford/peugeot diesels in the older S40/V50 cars.
Having said that, sometimes unrefinement means high reliability.
