There was a recall on the MK2 S60 for a dodgy tensioner on the aux belt so check if the car had this issue and if so was a recall done as for the water pump it is possible it could fail as could any part but volvo seem to be confident as they dont require a pump change at timing belt change which is 108000 miles (the whole changing of the pump while changing the timing belt came from a plastic impeller pump fitted by VW on the 96 passat and it became the norm as it was an easy job while the engine was stripped)As for fitting a new engine into a 12 reg car to me seems over the top especially as there is plenty of low mileage second hand engines available and generally volvo engines are reliable and any independent will be a lot easier to talk to than a dealer for fitting
