Your 40 MPG can't be bad. After fixing the bad petrol pipes at the rear of my 1.7, I went on a long journey and genuinely thought that the fuel gauge had stuck, over 50 MPG.

the plug gaps changed when the very long nosed ones came out on the B14 4E handbooks were, and still are a bit inaccurate sometimes .. My figures came from the volvo green manual .
looking at the fuel consumption we all should have bought GLT's instead if B14's ...
