Would the diag check have picked up this type of problem? I'm no car expert but I thought these things only picked up errors in electrical/computer components.

A specialist should be able to get there by his experience , skill and gut feelings alone without even plugging it in , I'm afraid the dealer is the only Volvo specialist in the true sense .. I don't mean particularly a volvo specialist , even if a bmw specialist went for a drive in it he would have an idea of what wrong .
