Really helpful.
Any advice on the dampers? Understand that gas shocks are better, but no idea what is reasonable priced quality/OEM?

^^^^^ Front and rear gas dampers that fit yours (and they even cofirm it in the ebay compatibility guide!) and KYB would be similar quality to OE (i think at some point Volvo used KYB but may be wrong, i know Honda, Rover and several others did), i've got KYB on mine (albeit with standard springs) and they give a very nice ride to the point people have come from a new car and been a passenger in mine and commented it's better than theirs.

Gas dampers would be better with lowered springs as lower springs tend to be a little stiffer than normal ride height. The gas part reacts quicker than the oil part to damp short, sharp spring movements and to a certain point, acts as a "buffer" to the oil part of the damper. There's a limit to this cushion/buffer effect though and that comes into play on hard driving so although this effect is still there, it's minimal but works well with the oil to give well controlled damping on all surfaces.

If you were going for normal springs, you could get away with oil dampers which are considerably cheaper but even then the gas ones give a better ride.
