Yay
After rather alot of cleaning - wiring loom and engine components followed by some circuit testing I was left with either the Hall effect sensor or ignition module.
The hall sensor seemed to be pulsing a signal so took a punt on the Ign module and £20 later plugged in the new one and after 3 seconds of cranking the engine fired up.
Lovely sound from the 2.3 petrol engine
