Thanks for the information Gatos. I am not great with computers, to be honest. I am currently planning on keeping the car for another 12-18 months so it will need to go through a couple more MOTs. I guess from the sounds of things I am best taking the car to the nearby Volvo specialist and getting the codes read in order to determine exactly what I need to do.
