I bought my V40 D2 SE in December 2012, and the only early problem was a faulty bearing. Overall it's been a very good car, until December 2016 that is. At 57,000 miles, an awful engine noise prompted me to call into my local garage and within minutes they told me the dual mass flywheel had gone. I spoke with my local dealer, and they were pretty lukewarm, as the car was four years old and 57k on the clock. So, I asked my local garage to just get on with it. Turns out both clutch and gearbox were also damaged, and I ended up with a total bill of £3,450.86 for reconditioned parts.
I wrote to Volvo customer care for a view on this, and part of the response was that financial assistance (which I didn't ask for) is given to 'loyal' customers - this after buying 4 Volvos from dealers (240GLT new, V50 2.4i new, V70 D5 nearly new, and this V40 new, plus full Volvo dealer servicing apart from the last service carried out by my excellent local garage).
It's still a very good car, but I no longer trust it. It seems to me that with age and mileage you wouldn't expect to have to fork out £3.5K....
I'm interested in any comments or similar experiences from forum bloggers.
